Custom Orthotics Profit Margin Calculator
To calculate custom orthotics profit margin, subtract your full direct cost per pair (lab fee, shipping, staff time, other supplies and expected adjustments) from the price your clinic collects, then divide by that price. Multiply contribution per pair by monthly pairs and subtract fixed service costs to estimate monthly orthotics revenue and profit.

Worked example
Hypothetical numbers only. They are not a benchmark or an Orthix price.
Price $450, lab $190, shipping $10, 45 minutes at $40 per hour, other direct cost $5, adjustment rate 10% at $60 per affected pair, 20 pairs a month, fixed service cost $500.
Staff time is $30.00. Expected adjustments are $6.00. Direct cost is $241.00. Contribution is $209.00. Margin is 46.44%. Monthly service operating profit is $3,680.00. Break-even is 3 pairs.
Method
How it's calculated
Staff time cost = minutes ÷ 60 × hourly staff cost.
Expected adjustment cost per pair = adjustment rate ÷ 100 × cost per affected pair.
Direct cost per pair = lab + shipping + time + other direct cost + expected adjustments.
Contribution per pair = selling price − direct cost.
Contribution margin = contribution ÷ selling price, when the selling price is above zero.
Monthly service operating profit = monthly pairs × contribution − fixed service cost.
Break-even pairs = fixed service cost ÷ contribution, rounded up, when contribution is above zero.
How ordering works with Orthix: most clinics order through the Orthix online app. You complete the online assessment, capture the patient’s feet on a phone or iPad, and the app generates a 3D model so you can submit the order in minutes. Foam impressions are also accepted, with pickup or courier available in the Lower Mainland. Typical fabrication is 5–10 days after lab acceptance. Orthix is a custom orthotics lab in Canada that supplies clinics only.

- What counts as a direct cost per pair?
- Direct cost per pair is the lab fee, allocated shipping, staff time, other supplies and the expected cost of adjustments. Fixed monthly service costs are separate and are subtracted after you multiply contribution by monthly pairs.
- Should assessment revenue be included in the selling price?
- Only if that fee is part of what the clinic collects for the pair you are costing. If assessment revenue is billed separately, leave it out of the selling price so you do not double-count staff time or shipping.
- Does this custom orthotics profit margin calculator tell me when to prescribe?
- No. It is a financial scenario from your own prices and costs. It is not a prescription recommendation and it does not use Orthix list prices.
- Are the amounts I enter stored or sent anywhere?
- They stay in this browser. Calculate, print and reset do not upload your figures. Save on this device is optional and local.
